Catalysts
Cooling catalysts
Solex moving bed heat exchange technology can handle any relatively free-flowing powder or crystalline bulk solids, making it the perfect candidate to cool catalysts in different forms, including:
- Powder
- Cylinders
- Spheres
- Trilobes
During both the production and regeneration phases of the catalyst life cycle, cooling is a vital step that enables operators to ensure optimal quality, preserve cracking sensitivities and mitigate material degradation and deactivation.
Solex offers an indirect heat transfer solution for catalyst cooling that uses fluids and not air to reduce energy consumption, eliminate emissions, minimize product abrasion and offer the ability to recover low-grade energy in small, medium and large production capacities.

Uniquely Solex
A sustainable solution
Our plate-based technology keeps fluids separate from the catalysts being cooled, thereby eliminating the risk of bacterial or odor contamination, as well as emissions, dust and fines. In doing so, operators can avoid purchasing additional pollution control equipment and more easily meet tight emission limits.
Maximize energy efficiency
Our heat exchange technology uses indirect heat transfer by conduction to reduce energy requirements by up to 90% (compared compared to direct cooling methods). Catalysts move slowly through the vertical heat exchanger while a cooling fluid moves counter-currently within the plates. This avoids the need to energetically mix the bed of material through large horsepower electric drives, big motors and other energy-consuming equipment.
The slow and controlled vertical movement of catalysts also prevents product abrasion and degradation while simultaneously mitigating wear to the exchanger and heat transfer plates.
Recover & reuse waste energy
The heat from the catalyst can be recovered in a wide range of input mediums, including steam, condensate or hot water — allowing for significant energy savings. Heat recovery loops can be optimized for maximum energy recovery and operational flexibility.
